Photo by The PackAs adults, we have trained ourselves to take life seriously. After all, we do have responsibilities. We have bills to pay and mouths to feed.
Adults must go to work everyday and deal with what life throws at them. Sometimes our lives as adults can get out of hand.
We try to deal with everything that is coming, but sooner or later something knocks us down.
There are several ways to deal with it: one way is humor.
If you can learn to find the humor in all situations you are going to be not only more positive in your daily life, but also much less stressed.
Laughter is a form of exercise, and that is not a joke. When you laugh you actually burn calories, so if you laugh a 50 times in a day it is like a quick fun 5 minute workout.
Start trying to find humor in one stressful situation every day. After a few days of looking for one event, start looking for two. Pretty soon you will be able to find a humorous aspect for everything in life.
There have been studies done showing the effects of laughter in our health. When we laugh the cortisol in our bodies is lowered. Cortisol is a stress hormone, which has been known to weaken our immune systems. Laughter not only decreases the amount of cortisol, it also shows signs of the hormone interferon-gamma that helps our bodies regulate cell growth and fight viruses.
When you are caught up in a stressful situation it is very easy to become agitated or even angry. It is not easy to find the humor in the situation, but it is worth the effort.
Just step back and think, “What am I going to solve by being angry?” The answer is always nothing. There is never anything solved when a person is angry.
Anger leads to further stress and isolation.
No one wants to be around someone who is angry all the time.
So instead look at the situation, note your feelings of anger, and make a joke about it. Every situation has a bit of humor in it if you look closely enough.
We are put through stressful situations everyday, no matter who we are. If we learn to turn the situation around and make it funny, everyone will feel better.
This is not to say that life is one big joke, but maybe it should be treated as such, at least some of the time.
Remember what it was like to be a young child? Children are innocent and happy. They have no worries or cares and they find some of the oddest things funny.
As adults we do not always understand their humor, but maybe we should try a little harder to.
By using humor to cope with difficult situations we can lighten our stress and enjoy life a little more.
